On Saturday, May 5 at 6:50 p.m. ET, the annual running of the Kentucky Derby will take place at the legendary Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Below are some of the horses that will be competing in the Run for the Roses.
2018 Kentucky Derby Horse Profile
Magnum Moon is one of four horses competing in the derby that is trained by Todd Pletcher, the trainer of last year’s Derby-winning horse, Always Dreaming. Recently winning his fourth straight race, Magnum Moon won the Arkansas Derby on April 14 at Oaklawn Park and the Rebel Stakes on March 17. These impressive performances have put him at the top of the kentuckyderby.com leaderboard with over 150 points.
Bred in Kentucky, this talented sophomore colt is ridden by Luis Saez. We have to mention that if he wants to win the Derby, he will have to buck history: no horse has won the Kentucky Derby without a start as a two-year-old, except for Apollo in 1882. If anyone is going to break the Curse of Apollo, it’ll be a champion horse with the pedigree, speed, and stamina of Magnum Moon.
Boasting a resume that includes winning the 2017 Breeder Cup Juvenile and being runner-up at the Champagne Stakes at Belmont, Good Magic is now 2-2-1 with earnings totaling around $1,855,000. This two-year-old, purchased for $1 million, is ridden by Jose Ortiz and trained by Chad Brown. The colt has some serious pedigree being the son of Curlin, the two-time Horse of the Year, and mare Glinda the Good. According to kentuckyderby.com, Good Magic takes the number two spot on the leaderboard with 134 combined points.
This bay-colored colt is another horse competing in the 2018 Derby trained by last year’s Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher. After finishing third at Belmont and winning the Florida Derby on March 31, Audible has become one of the leading favorites for the 2018 Kentucky Derby. In fact, the Kentucky Derby Futures Wager Pool 4 puts Audible in the top-three favorites. Even though pedigree does not guarantee a great finish in the Derby, if Audible’s family is any indication of how he’ll do, he’s a safe bet. The kentuckyderby.com puts him in the number three spot, earning 110 points.
Ridden by the 2017 Kentucky Derby-winning jockey John Velazquez, Noble Indy is another Todd Pletcher-trained colt that will be competing in the 2018 Run for the Roses. The kentuckyderby.com leaderboard places this Kentucky-bred colt in the fourth spot. Although he has demonstrated some impressive speed figures, he has earned a reputation for being a “brat” in the paddock and for having a fighting mentality, which can be good but also bad, since he can become a little too zealous out of the gates and quickly burn through all of his energy.
Coming in at number five on the kentuckyderby.com leaderboard is Vino Rosso. After this Kentucky-bred colt won $750,000 at the Wood Memorial on April 7, 2017 Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher added him to his Derby dreams. Winning this race also gave him 100 points, which qualified him to compete on May 5 at Churchill Downs. He is owned by Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable, and like his competitor Good Magic, he is also sired by Curlin. Many consider this colt to have great pedigree and pace, therefore, giving him double-digit odds going into the 2018 Kentucky Derby.
